Video: Dubai Metro’s Route 2020 takes shape, 50% tunnel works complete

The project spans 15km from Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station up to the site of Expo.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), announced the completion of 50 per cent of main tunneling works of the Route 2020 Project, which extends 3.2km at a varying depth from 12 to 36 metres. Al Tayer revealed that completion rate in the construction of stations ranges from four to 42 per cent.

Al Tayer made this statement during an inspection tour of stations of the Route 2020 Project that spans 15km from Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station up to the site of Expo.

Technology

The giant tunnel boring machine, known as ‘Al Wugeisha Expo 2020,’ commenced tunnel drilling works at Al Furjan, passed across the Discovery Gardens and reached the underground station nearby Jumeirah Golf Estates, last February. It will continue tunneling works up to the Dubai Investment Park, and all tunnel-related works are scheduled for completion in December this year.

Al Wugeisha can crush stones and penetrate through sandy layers or any soil components encountered during the drilling process. It has a huge metal gear supported by an automated tail. At the front, it has a cutting wheel with a cavity the shape of which varies according to the type of drilling and soil layers. The single concrete ring has six to seven molds, each ring measures about 1.5m in diameter.

Metro stations

Currently the architectural, constructional and electromechanical designs are being developed for Expo Station, elevated and underground stations, and Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station.

Completion rate in the underground station at Jumeirah Golf Estates has reached 42 per cent, whereas the completion rate of the underground station at DIP has reached 8 per cent. The completion rate has reached 14 per cent in the elevated station at Al Furjan. At Discovery Gardens it is 12 per cent, 7 per cent in Expo Station, and 3 per cent in Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station.

Completion rate has reached 50 per cent in the deep foundations of Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station. The footbridge linking the station and the Park-N-Ride Terminal has been removed to start construction works in the new station.

Discovery Gardens

The project contractor has completed construction works in the deep foundations and pillars at the Gardens area. Work is currently underway in the manufacturing of the metal structures of the elevated station at Discovery Gardens, where completion rate has reached 35 per cent. Works started in casting reinforced concrete for the foundations of the main building of Expo Station. The completion rate of casting concrete pillars of Expo Station has exceeded 70 per cent.

The completion rate in the construction of pillars and walls of the western gate of the station has exceeded 90 per cent and 40 per cent in the Eastern Gate. As for the installation of viaduct segments, about 60 of viaduct segments have been installed in various parts of the project.

Al Tayer was delighted with the work progress in Route 2020 Project, as it is moving according to the approved time chart. The first of the new metro carriages are expected to arrive in July this year. Construction works in viaducts are expected to be completed this November 2018. All rail works of Route 2020 are expected to be completed in July 2019.

RTA will start the test-run of the metro in February 2020.

PPR pipe:cost-effective and environmentally friendly

As a new type of pipe material, PPR pipe has a unique advantage.It can be used as a cold water pipe, hot water pipes can also be used.PPR pipe interface with hot-melt technology, fully integrated between the tubes together.So once installation and pressure test passed,there are not the same as the aluminum pipe leaking a long time on the aging phenomenon.

Advantage:moderate price, stable performance, heat insulation, corrosion resistance, smooth inner wall, safe and reliable, does not penetrate, use fixed number of year can be up to 50 years.

Disadvantages:the construction technical requirements higher, need to use special tools and professionals to undertake construction in order to ensure system safety.

Brass pipe:corrosion resistance and bactericidal

It is fine quality of the water pipe,has two interface ways:ferrule and welding.At present, most of the copper pipe installation is welding. It can like the PPR pipe, never leakage.Because of its expensive, generally is widely used in high-grade apartment or villa.

Aluminum-Plastic pipe: easy to aging and easy leakage

Aluminum tubes used to be more popular on the market as a pipe due to its light weight, durable and easy construction, which can be more suitable for using in home improvement. It gradually did not have the market. Products are being phased out.

Advantages: the price is cheaper, can be arbitrary curved bow, smooth surface, construction is convenient.

Disadvantages: easy to aging, the use of hidden trouble is much, use fixed number of year is short, the practice has proved that in the use of a year later, the pipe joint leakage phenomenon appear easily.

Galvanized pipe: easy to plug ,easily contaminated

China ministry of construction and other four ministries and commissions also send civilization to be banned from 2000 galvanized pipe, the new district of cold water pipe has been rarely used galvanized pipe.

Advantages: the variety is complete, supporting pipe fittings.

Disadvantages: belong to the state to ban the use of obsolete products, corrosion rust easily, cause water not free, easy to cause the pollution of water.

PVC pipe: easy to fracture, easy to deformation

In fact it is a kind of plastic pipe,usually with adhesive bonding interface.Because of its ability to frost and heat is not good, it is difficult to use as a hot water pipe; Strength is not to pipe pressure requirements, so rarely use cold water pipe.In most cases, PVC pipe is suitable for the wire and tube and drainage pipes.In addition, make PVC more soft chemical additive phthalein, impact on the kidney, liver, testes in the human body, can cause cancer, kidney damage, so don’t recommend you to buy.

Advantages: lightweight, easy installation, low cost, also is not easy to decay.

Disadvantages: low quality will be very fragile, easy to fracture, it is easy to deformation when it is heated.

“Polypropylene (PP) also known as polypropene, is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide variety of applications including packaging and labeling, textiles (e.g., ropes, thermal underwear and carpets), stationery, plastic parts and reusable containers of various types, laboratory equipment, loudspeakers, automotive components, transvaginal mesh[1] and polymer banknotes. An addition polymer made from the monomer propylene, it is rugged and unusually resistant to many chemical solvents, bases and acids.

Polypropylene has a relatively slippery “low energy surface” that means that many common glues will not form adequate joints. Joining of polypropylene is often done using welding processes.”

So what is the advantage of using PPR material pipes?
Bin Dasmal Group held a study comparing about PPR and GI pipes, he’s is what they came into conclusion.

“According to the PPR suppliers, some of the advantages of a PPR pipe in contrast with a GI pipe are as follows:

1. PPR pipes are much more lightweight than GI pipes. Although GI pipes themselves are usually quite light, PPR pipes outperform the metal by a huge degree. Lightweight materials also help keep transportation and handling costs low.

2. PPR pipes also happen to have a very smooth internal surface, which is not something GI pipes can achieve. Smooth internal surfaces create less friction and less buildup.

3. PPR can achieve a higher level of flow than GI pipes, which requires less power and reduces the cost of electric power.

4. PPR pipes are more resistant to corrosion than GI pipes.

5. PPR pipes are leak proof compared to many GI pipes, which are threaded together and run the risk of eventually losing their galvanization.

6. No significant additional materials are required when installing PPR pipes, which lowers cost and raises ease of installation significantly.

Though certain circumstances and the presence of multiple variables might still lead you to select GI pipes over PPR ones, at a glance PPR pipes present a host of advantages over their metal counterparts.”
